Part 2 - Switching Genres and Sub Genres
Poem - Adventure
Did the crocodile change his course?
A hot sunny day, a quiet fishing camp,
The hook and rod set for fishing on the banks.
Hurried, the pole was cast into wands.
Beneath the waters, the hooks hit the swamp.
Deep inside, the tensions fanned the fray.
A sudden yell, sharp, intense and smashing.
Beyond hissing winds and waves crashing.
Vowing a silent feast, the beast crept a slow sway.
The danger echoed a fear still frozen low.
Quick in action, they both pulled her in flight.
Their hearts still racing, fleeing far from its bite.
Relieved of fear, they watched the giant go.
Shifting Adventure Poem to Fantasy Story
Hrithvik was just turning five when his father encouraged him to write a diary of his day’s accomplishments. It slowly compelled him to emerge with his own stories in his late teens. Henceforth, he gained expertise in his writing. He gained control over his craft with each of his experiences. He ventured on a treasure hunt, trying different paths in the labyrinth of his writing. He turned wise beyond his years.
One fine evening, Hrithvik wrote a story for the mentioned theme of a competition. In the story, the lead character acquired a magic book that transformed the written words into truths and the imaginations into reality when inked with the Golden Pen. He explored different strategies to guide the readers through the influence of the lead character. He chose to use his pen as a character in his story. The pen was in golden hue that marked the significant role in the story. After finishing his story, he inscribed the end, marking the story completed.
Suddenly, to his surprise, he found himself teleported into the kingdom of the netherworld he created, where even plants, animals and even mountains and seas could voice their thoughts.
The Golden Pen spoke to him about its ability to materialize imaginative words into an absolute reality. It also warned him to be careful while etching his words in the silver pages of the magical book. The Golden Pen advised him to continue his writing, advised him to fix the story till the end in his own way and as he wished to continue or end the story by his own means. The Golden Pen also told him he couldn’t change the story if he marked his story as completed. It insisted him that, if once the story was marked to completion, then the story would unfold the way as he penned it down.
No sooner had the pen insisted, Hrithvik turned pale. He felt he should have been informed a little earlier. He was just finishing a short story and marked its completion in the magical book. He panicked not to have written the story or at least it should not be revisited by time demanding the unexpected and conditioned undo for his past mistake. His life had changed altogether that he felt an enormous burden weighing on his shoulders.
Hrithvik was shocked to know why the golden pen was silent so long. He asked, "Better, if it was known to me well before I wrote. Why were you silent till I write a story? I have completed a story of a mammoth beast trap and escape. What if it turns reality, I couldn't even think of it."
The Golden Pen said, "I came into being only after the story was marked complete. Things take shape only after committing the completion. So, obviously, I was helpless to you on your first story."
The Golden Pen told him, “Unfortunately, you have written a short story and also marked your completion. And now, you can only rewrite the story with the already marked major events. The core events of your story remains unchanged. Like, planning a trip, the giant beast traps someone, and the happy rescue will follow. But for a happy rescue, you needed to revisit your writing by altering other minor things to fit a logical rescue from a mammoth alligator.”
Hrithvik felt the situation was beyond his control. He couldn’t help his imaginative world taking its shape in reality anymore.
Hrithvik thought for a while to make it a win-win situation. So that the justice was the same either for themselves or for others.
Before the event triggered in reality, he had to complete the story to ensure a satisfied ending that fitted logically too.
Hrithvik said, “The crux of the story is the leading character together with his family goes fishing. They encounter a deadly crocodile, and how they save each other is the basis of the story.”
Hrithvik also asked if there was any remedy for the big mistake he had committed. The Golden Pen hinted to him to talk to animals with the help of the Golden Pen.
Hrithvik resorted to deep thinking. He decided to befriend the crocodile. He approached the gigantic crocodile that was taking rest after its feast. With the help of the Golden Pen, Hrithvik asked the crocodile to help in resolving the situation. But he failed to support Hrithvik and turned things to his advantage. Even after telling everything that had happened, the Crocodile refused to starve. Moreover, he challenged Hrithvik to face him through his writing skills. The Crocodile assured him that it was possible if he could face him and win through his writing. He would abide by whatever the story implied to him. Hrithvik was disappointed to the core, that he returned helpless.
Hrithvik avoided going to fishing. But his family and friends persuaded him again and again. Finally, the day had arrived when he could not afford a ‘No.’
Everybody rejoiced in the happiness that the day had come for them. Except Hrithvik, everyone welcomed the trip. And Hrithvik was completely blank, unlike the others. They arrived at the spot and were looking for a convenient place for fishing.
The place was sparsely populated, unlike the usual days. Hrithvik rushed to finish his newly moulded story to weed off his previous blunder. To hide the mishap that his mind was weathering in storm, he isolated himself from others. He started spinning his thoughts to rewrite the story. He read the story once before his rewriting adventure.
“Hrithvik and his family went fishing and encountered a crocodile in the flash floods of the river. With his timely call, Hrithvik alerted his father. His mother turned to him quickly and pushed him out of the river onto the bank. Sooner, Hrithvik and his father both of them in turn helped by pulling her from falling into the waters. Everyone rushed out of the river banks. The family fled fast, successfully rescuing themselves from the threat of the crocodile.”
Hrithvik prayed to God and took the Golden Pen and started unfurling his thoughts in the magical book with the ink that bled his earnest prayers. His hands shook a little and his heart pounded faster than usual. He called the name of his dear God and continued writing the sequel. After he finished his writing, he kept the Golden Pen down, closing the book. Taking a deep breath, he opened his eyes wide and felt a relief wash over him. But, still he feared how the entirety would take its right form in reality.
No sooner had he put the pen down on the book and after a short monologue with him, he heard someone yelling for rescue and so he rushed after the voice. He shouted at his father to come out of the river. His mother went a foot before and pushed her beloved, risking her own life. But the Crocodile suddenly shapeshifted and attained a human form. Hrithvik felt a sigh of relief washed over him to see his story of remedy turned into the reality.
The shapeshifted crocodile claimed him, a man turned crocodile because of his curse. He had belittled a man upon his personal grudges, which defamed the man and caused him financially suffering. His wife fled to him for justice. He ignored her plea and rejected answering her. She cursed him. He took an alligator form to lead a life of solemn thriving.
Gradually, he turned into an alligator as he realized the consequences of his blunder. He apologized for his vengeful act of defaming her husband. He also asked her about the remedy for his sufferings.
She told him if he could see anyone who could risk their life to save their dear ones to escape him feasting on them, he would regain his form. He thanked Hrithvik’s mother, praising her: “You risked your life to save your husband’s life. I feel the same lady who cursed me had sent you to my rescue. In the form of yours, she is now relieved me of this dreadful suffering. I bow to you with a thankful heart for saving me from the sufferings of this other world.”
This was the story he redrafted with the Golden Pen on the magical book. The Golden Pen wrote the fate of the Crocodile in his mind. The Crocodile reacted accordingly.
The Golden Pen gave Hrithvik his cheers, that his presence of mind changed the fate of a man suffering in silence for years.
Hrithvik replied to him, “I was not just relieved of the eerie 'Control Z' of my life’s lesson yet. I never thought the undo function would end up revisiting the unknown world of blunder. Somehow, I managed to rewrite the reality to take its shape in my way. It took me a while to accept the challenge of the crocodile. Till now, it lingers as waves of fear deep inside me.”
The Golden Pen expressed that he would let him free if he felt the strange, unknown eerie upon its presence. Hrithvik interrupted and told, “Not the way you think, dear Golden Pen... I, no more, will fear the unknown. I assure you that you can be with me forever if you wished.”
Hrithvik and his family beamed with pride about the courage of their son and his presence of mind. Hrithvik walked away from the river bank and gradually fading into the shadows with pride and the Golden Pen. His shadows painted the foot-marks of his commitment wrapped with contentment. He was happy that he prevented a mishap from happening in reality and also saving his family at the right moment.
